Teaching Spanish Syllables (Sílabas Directas / Open Syllables) in K -1: ABC Paso a Paso Handwriting Activities

If you teach reading in a bilingual or dual language classroom , then you know how important it is to start with the building blocks of Spanish literacy.  In English, as teachers we often talk about 'open' and 'closed' syllables.  In Spanish, the authentic way to refer to 'open syllables' is 'sílabas directas'.  

In this post, I am going to introduce you to a bundled resource that will guide your Pre-k, Kinders, and even first graders through syllable work via handwriting. letter recognition and some fine motor practice.

Why Start with Sílabas Directas?

In authentic Spanish literacy instruction, students first master sílabas directas because they are the easiest to decode and blend.  

For example,

ma, me, mi, mo, mu    ➡️   mamá, mesa, Mimí, moto, muñeca

pa, pe, pi, po, pu.        ➡️    papá, pera, Pipo, pollo pulpo

By tracing, reading,  and coloring these syllables step by step, students build the foundation for reading fluency and writing confidence that they need.
